Hello, CHILD!

Britney was kind enough to jot notes for me last meeting. Here are the minutes from Monday, February 16.

We will have an optional meeting on Wednesday, February 25 to make posters for the book sale and for tee-shirts. The book lady may not be a possibility – Maggie hasn’t had luck contacting her, but it’s still an option. Dr. Matoush seemed to think that CHILD should get a profit from the book sale, but the nice lady might not come if that’s the case. Britney contacted someone about getting a room in Madison, which will be about $60 a night – so, if the lady comes, we will have a place for her to stay!

Morgan sent out information about the T-shirt sale – please see your e-mails about selling and buying shirts and contact Morgan if you have any questions.

Britney FINALLY heard back from the website guy – yay! She and I will work to fix the glitches and put all of the past minutes up for everyone to see – we will soon have everything in one place, hopefully, which will be wonderful!

Our next regular meeting is scheduled for March 11. Tiffany should have the materials for our book-binding project for everyone to work on. Our deadline is April, so we need to work together to get everything accomplished! We will!

Lastly, Britney is still working on the Smokey Mountain High School project. She will keep us updated.

February 4 Minutes

HEY, CHILD!

The first meeting of the Spring 2009 semester was held on February 4 at 5:30 pm. Britney opened the meeting with a discussion of the Smokey Mountain High School (SMHS) project. Though we are still trying to participate in this new and exciting program (see last minutes), Britney is having a hard time getting feedback from the administrators at SMHS. We will keep everyone updated as we acquire more information about the program.

Tiffany spoke about a great service opportunity that ALL CHILD members can be a part of! A first grade teacher at Fairview elementary needs some books put together for Fairview's Science Field Day. Everyone agreed that the books could be easily stitched in one meeting. Tiffany is in charge of getting the pages and the stitching materials - please come to the next meeting to help out! The teacher also said that Fairview will need volunteers for the Field Day, itself, but students from the methods classes will be largely invited to participate in that activity.

Maggie discussed a book sale that is very exciting for CHILD and for WCU. Maggie knows a nice woman in Morganton who sells children's books for HALF of the list price. She also sells damaged books that she has repaired for about $1 - $3 each. After much discussion, we decided that the best way to ensure a worthwhile trip to WCU for Maggie's contact is to rent a room in Maddison, the graduate dorm, and host a 2-day book show. The tentative dates for the show are March 19 and 20. We will need to get our guest a meal card and a temporary parking pass in addition to the room in Maddison. The book show will most likely be held in Killian 104 or in the Killian hallways. This is such an exciting opportunity - it is never too early to start a book collection for one's classroom or children!

Morgan, our resident artist, will bring in a tee-shirt design at our next meeting. She described two designs, and most members prefered a tee with CHILD on the front, upper left corner, and an inspirational quote with the word "CHILD" on the back. We hope to purchase the shirts from Simply T's - Morgan is now in charge of the tee-shirt project.

Britney also had dishartening news about the website. We still cannot use it, and our website man has all but disappeared! Maggie volunteered to try to fix the problems so that we can use the website for CHILD purposes. Yay, Maggie!

The meeting closed with a discussion of meeting times for the remainder of the semester. We plan to alternate Mondays and Wednesdays so that more people can stay involved. Our next meeting will be on Monday, February 16 at 5:15 p.m.

Hello, CHILD!

On December 4, 2008, CHILD members met in Killian 127 for our final meeting of the Fall 2008 semester. We discussed Britney O. and Rebekah B.’s Civic Engagement Project and other plans for the upcoming spring.

Britney and Rebekah completed a project in which they researched high school dropout rates, and, especially, the dropout impact on Sylva’s Smokey Mountain High School (SMHS). In the fast-approaching spring, we plan to extend the girls’ project through CHILD and work with high school students at SMHS after school to encourage them to stay in school and to pursue a college education. We hope to do a “college enhancement” kind of program to provide students with enrichment opportunities in addition to necessary tutoring and mentoring. Members suggested assisting students with résumés, college and scholarship applications, and other college and career readiness activities. We hope to meet the various needs of all of the students with whom we work so that our program becomes a wide-reaching asset to the local high school and the community.

Anyone interested in working with CHILD at SMHS will need to have a current background check. One member suggested the possibility of holding fundraisers to raise money to reimburse anyone committed to service for his or her background check. We are in hopes that Dr. Ruff may have more information on background checks, how to acquire them most easily, and how “current” the information must be for students to be allowed to work with youth in the school system.

Since the program will most likely take place after school, we must consider our supervision options and program expectations. Britney will work with other CHILD members to complete a written proposal including all of our hopes for the program as well as all of the necessary program components (supervision, funding, expectations, etc.) and carry that document with her when she meets with the SMHS vice principal this spring.

We will need supervisors, probably from Western Carolina University (WCU) and SMHS. A possible contact for SMHS is the guidance counselor, and instructors in the teacher education program at WCU should be more than willing to help us. We also HAVE to recruit more members or at least program participants to make this program work! This is going to be such a worthwhile endeavor—it’s up to us to make a difference in the lives of these young people! We were all in their shoes once upon a time.

Other meeting topics were meeting times for next semester and the Reynolds carnival for Relay for Life. If we work with the Honors College to conduct a carnival to raise money for Relay for Life, we need to make some decisions fairly soon. Be thinking about what kinds of games you might like to see, possibilities for raffles, and whether the event should be open to the community.

October 16 Minutes and Updates

Hello, CHILD!

On October 16, 2008, CHILD members met for a social gathering at the Cat's Den at 7 pm. We discussed the upcoming CHILD events and getting a gift for John, our website guy.

The meeting opened with a brief discussion of the volunteer activities. The contact for the activities is now our co-president Kasey E. Tiffany P. and Kasey E. will be our representatives for Dr. Ruff's volunteer committee meetings.

Our first upcoming social event is TRUNK OR TREAT, hosted by Alpha Gamma Delta. TRUNK OR TREAT will be at the 2000 House in the Greek Village from 6 - 9 pm on Monday, October 27. Please see the e-mail about this event, and don't forget to bring candy even if you won't be able to volunteer!

The CHILD bake sale will be next week, as well. The bake sale will be in the Killian breezeway from 8 am - 4 pm on Thursday, October 3o. Please see the e-mail regarding what you are to bring, and if you did not sign up to bring anything, you still can!!! All goods should be delivered to the breezeway by 8 am on the 30th. If no CHILD member is present, please take your goods to Dr. Matoush's office in Killian 123. Co-President Britney O. will be getting the permit for the bake sale.

The third upcoming social event is the November 1 football game. Please come out for a fun CHILD evening and to support our football team!

We decided to get John a $25 gift card to Wal*Mart. We will sign the card from CHILD and Britney O. will deliver it to him. We are super grateful for his help!

Game Night

Hello, CHILD! On Thursday, September 18 we met for Game Night, and it was definitely a good time. Britney opened the meeting with a welcome and Tiffany gave a quick overview of many of the service opportunities that we, CHILD members, will be a part of this year.

Tiffany provided a great handout with contact information, dates, and the titles of the programs that we plan to help out with. The organizations include: mentoring students in the Pre-College program, writing for the Women's Issues magazine, working in Hendersonville encouraging minority students to go to college, helping with an all-girls' robotics club at Cullowhee Valley Elementary School, participating in Peace Jam, and helping with the new Western Carolina University after-school program. Dr. Jamel Anderson-Ruff is helping us with these activities, so THANK YOU, Dr. Anderson-Ruff! Anyone interested in more information or volunteering with any of the programs, please contact Tiffany by e-mail (tbprickett1@catamount.wcu.edu).

Tiffany also briefly discussed Relay for Life and our team participation. The event is scheduled for April 17-18, 2009. We will need to think about establishing our own team this year, aside from the Fighting Octopi. Thanks for your help and dedication in the past, ladies.

Britney discussed our new webpage and pulled it up for all of us to see. It is fantastic, and we are very grateful to Mr. John for helping us out!

Please sign up to bring baked goods to the October 30 bake sale, and be sure to see Reida's post, outlining the volunteer schedule to work the event.

Also, remember that the Cullowhee Valley Fall Festival will be on Friday, September 26. I am sure that they would love to have as many volunteers as possible!

Remember to keep up with your service hours and report them at meetings. As Tiffany said, we love to hear what you're doing and your service counts towards your CHILD participation.

Hey everyone! I am excited to report that we had improved attendance at our last meeting. I really hope that we continue to grow. Our last meeting focused on Relay for Life. The "Fighting Octopi" currently have $390 in their Relay fund and we have over $200 to turn in at the meeting next week. A big part of our discussion focused on the bake sale, which will take place in Killian Breezeway on Monday, March 17 from 9:00-4:00. Thank you to those who signed up to work the booth or bring goodies. Even if you did not sign up to bring treats, we will be accepting them on the day of the bake sale. You can contact T. Prickett (tbprickett1@catamount.wcu.edu) to tell her what you will bring or you can simply show up. You can also support our cause by coming by an purchasing goodies and telling your friends where we are will be located. I really appreciate everyone's efforts to contribute as much as they can. We can raise a lot of money if we have the kind of support that we had at last semester's bake sale.

We also discussed ways to use a toilet as a fund raiser and received a number of suggestions, which we greatly appreciate. We also discussed several ideas for the night of Relay, a discussion which will continue after Easter Break. We concluded the meeting by making signs for the bake sale. Hey Everyone! I hope everyone had an excellent spring break. I wanted to share a few pieces of information from our last meeting. Most importantly, we decided that our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 11 at 8:00 P.M in Killian 127. We also decided that we will have a bake sale on Monday, March 17 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. We still need people to cover shifts and bring baked goods, so please let me know what you can do at the meeting or e-mail me at tbprickett1@catamount.wcu.edu. We are considering donating all of the profits from the bake sale to Relay for Life, but this should be determined for certain at our next meeting. Also, the week before spring break, several of our members went to Fairview Elementary to help the after school students make comic books. Thank you for all who attended. We had a great turn-out! Also, at our last meeting we discussed several additional volunteer opportunities, which will be discussed in more depth at our next meeting. I hope to see everyone on Tuesday so we have a strong representation of our members as we make club decisions. Have a happy Monday! :)

Relay Information and Feb. 5, 2008 Minutes

Hey Everyone. I would like to thank all of you who came to our meeting on February 5, 2008. We had a few updates about Relay for Life, and then we had a time of relaxation and fun playing "Boxers or Briefs". We learned a lot about each other and a lot of people really enjoyed the game. Also, thank you Dr. Rose for joining us in this fun game.

We decided that the next meeting will be February 19, 2008 at 8:00 PM. We moved the meeting so that it would be an hour later to see if this increases attendance. It has been brought to our attention that many people do not get out of class until close to 8:00. Please pass this on to friends that you think may want to join our club, and/or our fight against cancer!

Also, there will be a Relay for Life Kick Off Party on Feb. 13 at 7:00 PM in the UC Cardinal Room. If you would like to attend, email Lisa Duff at lisa.duff@cancer.org. Also, you must be a member of a team to go, so if you have not signed up, please go to www.events.cancer.org/rflwcu. Click "join a team" and then under team name, type "fighting octopi". It will pull up a list of teams, and select the team that has "Kerri Galloway" as the captain. Follow the steps to register. You can pay the $10 registration fee online or you can choose to pay by mail. The fee is optional, but it really helps the team and covers the cost of the t-shirt.

Additionally, feel free to e-mail me, Tiffany P. (tbprickett1@catamount.wcu.edu) or Kerri G. (kdgalloway1@catamount.wcu.edu), if you have ideas for our theme. It should be a movie title since the overall theme is "lights, camera, cure". We are thinking that it would be best to choose an underwater movie since we are the "fighting octopi", but we are open to any suggestions.

Also, contact me or Kerri if you would like beads and patterns to make cancer awareness ribbons, or if you would like lumiar bag information or feet to sell to raise money. If you are just collecting a donation, you can print receipt forms on the team's website. E-mail to request information, submit ideas, or make comments. Thank you for the support.

You may bring any money raised for Relay for Life to CHILD meetings or you can give it to Tiffany P. Once again, thank you!

Hello all! Just wanted to inform you of our next CHILD meeting which will be held on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 7 p.m. in Killian 109 as usual. Please, if at all possible we'd like to see you at our last meeting of the semester! We'll be discussing plans for next semester and thinking about what we can do to recruit new members in the future. If we don't recruit new members, CHILD will fold as a club. Hi everyone! Just another update - we made $42.86 in donations from what we had left over from the bake sale! We'll use this money to purchase materials for the event we're sponsoring, "Who's Smarter than a 5th grader?" near the end of November and also to order pizza for our next meeting. With that our next meeting will be Monday, November 12 at 7 p.m. in Killian 109. During this meeting, we'll be getting our display board ready for "Who's Smarter than a 5th grader?", and also talking and preparing to do a puppet show at a local elementary school. October 8 Meeting

Hey Everyone! We confirmed that we will meet at Colima's for dinner on October 18th; however, the time has changed from 7:00 to 7:30. We would love for all members to attend, because this will be a great chance for us to get to know each other over a relaxing meal. In addressing the needs of the bake sale, we passed around a sign-up sheets to determine who could bring what items. If you would like to bring some baked goods for us to sale on October 22 (0r if you can help work the booth any time between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM), please send this information to rrdaves1@catamount.wcu.edu . Also, we discussed joining "The Fighting Octopi" team for Relay for life. All members in attendance supported this idea. Further details will be discussed during future meetings. We got the ball rolling and have made plans to hold our first Bake Sale this year on Monday, October 22, 2007 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. under the Killian Breezeway. We would like to have at least two people for each time slot. So, if you weren't at the meeting and would like to sign up for a time, e-mail Reida and let her know which time and she will add it to her spreadsheet. Also, please e-mail Reida and let her know what you can bring to the bake sale (we did not sign up for this at the meeting).

We have set a tentative date of Thursday, October 18th to have dinner as a group. We have decided to have this at Colima's Mexican Restaurant at 7 p.m. If you are able to make it that would be wonderful! This will be a great way to get to know everyone better and build community!!!

Stephanie Doig has graciously volunteered herself to work on our bulletin board! Thanks!

Finally, we talked about getting some type of puppet show or game night type of deal together for a local elementary schools after school program. We are looking into getting that arranged at Cullowhee Valley or Fairview (since they are the 2 closest to campus).

-We started off discussing a program that Books-a-million has a program in which it would donate some of its funds to us, something that sounded like a good idea

-It was brought up that we will probably start having an icebreaker before each meeting to help the meetings go a bit smoother, so bring a friend!

-Next Meeting: 4-2-07 at 7pm in Killian 127 (we have made that the designated meeting place for all future meetings, if we have to meet somewhere else then a sign will be posted on the door.) Our next meeting will also be posted through MyCat

-Our next sale will either be a sucker sale or a bake sale, for the sucker sale it will be $120.00 for two bags

Our t-shirts have finally been ordered! Courtney took it to the place in Asheville where we are getting them from. We ordered 80 shirts instead of 100 because we didn't think that we would get them all sold considering its winding down to the end of the semester. So, we have about 12 of each size small to x-large extra for others to buy if they want them. If there are any questions, once again please feel free to contact any officer!

Hello everyone! Here's the first post for the New Year 2007! It's been a while so let's see how this thing is going to work :)

A few updates.....
*The t-shirt orders didn't go out this past Friday. Courtney had some car trouble and wasn't able to make it to Asheville, but the orders WILL go out this week. No worries, we WILL get the shirts by the end of the semester.
*Britney has informed me that we have books ordered. The lady that she talked to isn't able to get us the deal we first had set but we are getting 80 books for $100. If we don't have the money at the time to pay for all of these books, don't worry, the lady is going to give them to the school she is working at.

Next CHILD meeting

Next CHILD meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 6:30 at Colima's. Our main priorities will be to EAT and JUST HAVE FUN. However, we will need to discuss a few things - mainly stuff about the shirts (this will NOT take too long). You are welcome to invite a guest. PLEASE let me know ASAP if anyone will be coming with you so I can give Colima's a headcount. If I have not received an email from you, I still need to know if you are coming so email me. I will probably be bringing a guest so each of you are more than welcome to do this. Remember, this meal is on you; we do NOT have the money to pay for everyone at this time. If you have any questions or need a ride, please let me know. I already know Lauren will be needing a ride. About next meeting

Hey guys... just wanted to say thanks to all who baked, helped with bake sale, and helped/attended the homecoming parade. Everything went fantastic! About the next meeting... Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 6:30. I have been talking to some people about getting together and going out to eat - several people have told me that this would be a good, relaxing time just to get to know one another (I know a lot of you were given this opportunity at the homecoming parade...I'm glad!). But, I do think that it would be a good idea for all of us to get to know one another better minus all of the stress of the school setting. So... two options - we can do this on Thursday the 26th (go out to eat and have our meeting towards the end of our supper) OR we can have our meeting on campus Thursday the 26th and then do the eating out thing another night. I'm thinking, from people I've talked with thus far, that eating out and meeting at the same time on the 26th would work the best. Also, I have been asked that we do Colima's if everyone else likes that (for those of you that know me you know that this works great for me - I LOVE COLIMA'S). BUT we will arrange and pick as needed to meet everyone's needs. What I need from you... I need an email from each of you telling me what you would prefer; so answer these questions-
1. Do you want to just have the meeting on campus the 26th? OR do you want to meet and eat on the 26th?
2. If you do not want to meet and eat on the 26th, what other night would work better for you; honestly, if this night will not work then we will probably have to pick a weekend night? Note, even if we don't eat we will still be having a meeting!
3. What eating place works best for you?
4. Would you need a ride to the eating place whatever day we do it?
I would like to have these emails back before Fall Break so I can post back on here our plans. So keep checking this site daily!

Just a note to lighten your load...

Hey guys. Hope you are all having a great beginning of the week. Just wanted to let you know - if I, or anyone else, asks you to get something done by a certain date don't take this as if you don't get it done by then we are going to jump down your case. We are ALL extremely busy. Last year, we didn't meet about three-fourths of our deadlines so don't ever think that we will be mad if we miss a couple of this year's deadlines. We are just so happy to have so many people involved and trying their best to get stuff done. Now, there is a difference between putting stuff off and never doing it and just not being able to get to it because of school work. Trust me... school work DOES come first; it does and always will for me (as I expect it will for you!). If you can't meet a deadline or feel you are running out of time trying to get something together, email or IM someone and we'll work it out together. There is no need for anyone in this club to feel stressed because of club work; you have too many more important things to worry about. Please don't hesitate to ask for help. With all of that said, I hope you all feel better. Have a great week and I will see many of you Thursday at the bake sale. Don't forget about the meeting after the sale!

Bake sale is this Thursday (10-12-06)! Some people have said that they were confused on this bc I didn't say the exact date in the last blog - sorry! Also, we are NOT meeting tomorrow (Monday night) to make anything. Next time we will all see each other is Thursday during the sale and that night for the meeting (and maybe for the banner making). Lots of news... please read carefully

First, there are no more homecoming banners. However, Thursday the 12th from 6-10 there will be a homecoming banner making in the UC; at this time, there will be a few extra banners. At our meeting at 630 this same night in front of Killian, we will decide if we want to go to this or just go with the posters. Going to this, will depend on how many people can go straight from our meeting to the UC to get started making it. The whole banner will have to be done this night because it is due the next day (if we decide to do it!). We will discuss this Thursday night. Obviously, the homecoming banner making is off Monday night.

Second, here is a list of bake sale times. The only location is in the Killian Breezeway. The permit needs to be at this table at 930 AM. All baked items need to be at this table pretty early in the morning. Same procedures go as last time, if you need anything call me (Erika 7044183773).

These are the people who signed up for the homecoming parade. Remember to meet at the church NO LATER than 345. Line up is at 430. The parade will probably be over around 7 or 8; make sure you leave this whole afternoon and early night open if you are doing this. Also, remember to bring candy to throw out. If you are not able to attend, try to buy some candy and get it to one of the following people. If you said you would bring balloons, tape, signs, etc. don't foget to bring them. It will probably be cool by the beginning of the parade so dress appropriately. Last couple of reminders - If you are in charge of speakers, get that underway this week. Bake Sale Changes

We will NOT be having the bake sale this Thursday. I have heard from many people that this week is very hectic and they need a little more time to bake. Plus, I have not heard anything about the people who are in charge of getting the permits. However, to the ones in charge of this - if you have already gotten the permits, try and go back and change the date. We WILL be having the bake sale the following Thursday (October 5); same time and places apply. Because of this switch, if your availability does not work please let me know ASAP. We also have a CHILD meeting this night so this seems more logical anyways. Our plans were to have the sale until 6:30 which is right when our meeting starts so this time also works great; instead of meeting in KL I think we will just meet in Dodson since our sale is only at that location from 5:30-6:30; everyone needs to meet at that stand and then we can relocate upstairs in Dodson; we can eat supper and meet there. Beginning of the Year - CHILD

This is something new that we are trying this year. Daniel and I (Erika) can send you notices and updates about CHILD. You can not respond to this website unless you have the username and password. We will decide at a later time if we want this to be a cite where everyone can put up announcements and questions; if we make this open to everyone than it will also be open to spam! You guys have already been receiving a lot of mail from us and I don't want to back up your email so I'm thinking that if you all could check this regularly (about every other day) than it might work better. So... first big change - Our first meeting is next Thur which is SEPTEMBER not August 7th. We will meet in KL 127 at 6; we will stick around until everyone is done eating and conversating. We have the room until 8; we may or may not stay that long. If you want pizza be there at 6. We will not be voting on officers this night. We will be talking about CHILD last year and events that we would like to participate in this year. We will also be setting up a new time to meet (which will take place in about a week or two); at this meeting we will do the officers and make the BIG decisions. Remember Daniel and I will be selling left over shirts from last year. They are $10; we only have 6 shirts left. We will try to reorder though.
